Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to comprehend the nature of hardship faced by married immigrant women as parents of adolescent children.

Methods: This study conducted in-depth interviews of seven married immigrant women who care for their adolescent children and analyzed their responses using the hermeneutic phenomenology of Giorgi.

Results: We identified three main themes and 15 sub-themes pertaining to married immigrant women with adolescent children. The three main themes were: recognition of changing relationship with adolescent children, reaction to the change, and search for ways to restore the relationship.

Conclusion: We need a social system and educational program to support immigrant women who care for their adolescent children. A new paradigm should be included in the curriculum to enable multi-cultural and non-multi-cultural families to better communicate with and relate to one another.
